DON’T LET HIM KNOW, by SANDIP ROY
In India, a culture with huge social pressures to marry, a gay man may be forced by family expectations to give up the love of his life. Sometimes his sacrifices and lies go undetected by the rest of the family. Sometimes not.
In these twelve linked stories, we get to know the Mitra family from many sides and at many ages. Romola knows that her husband once loved a man before he married her. Avisham thinks the man he loved went to America and never wrote him. Amit thinks he has discovered a letter from a lover of his mother’s. There are plenty of secrets and misunderstandings in this Indian family – you can practically hear the timebombs ticking, waiting to go off. Roy is a subtle, beautiful writer, with compassion for all his characters. These stories read too quickly. You won’t want to finish them.
It’s a $16 paperback and there are plenty of copies at University Book Store.
I sure do miss some of you. It’s summer. You need a book in your hand. Come back and say hello, and discuss a few stories. You’ll be glad you did, and we’ll love seeing you again. – Nick
