Nick’s Pick for July

dro1I’ve never read anything like this book – except frightening, dystopian science-fiction, and my pick for July is true. There are so many little wars in the Middle East that they blur and run together for those of us who live in luckier places – but not when you’re living in the middle of them. THE DRONE EATS WITH ME was written by a man trying to raise five children in the Gaza strip, as he and his family endure Israel’s 2014 invasion. Each page is written not knowing if Abu Saif will be alive the next day to continue. The horror is from the ordinariness of the war, of the drones humming overhead and singling out the houses that will be destroyed. You will value every minute of your privileged, safe life after experiencing this brave and harrowing book.

FATHER OF FIVE RISKS HIS LIFE EVERY DAY

Atef Abu Saif is raising his family in the largest refugee camp in Palestine. He risks his life every day walking to the Internet café to write the pages you will read in this book.

Experience this level-headed, understated account of 51 hellish days of 21st century warfare in Gaza, in which 1900 civilians were killed. It’s a world of bulldozed homes and orchards, homeless animals, constant electricity outs, uncharged phones, and waiting lines at every bathroom.

You, too, will ask, like his eleven-year-old son who’s been lucky enough to survive three wars, “Daddy, when will the next war be?”

It’s an easy read, honest and quick, and teaches you more about the world we live in than many an historical account. This is war as it is lived today. No Israeli soldier is glimpsed by anyone in this book. The killing is all done by drones controlled by an invisible enemy many miles away. You will never think about drones the same way again. Rick Simonson of Elliott Bay Book Company is also raving about this book. You need to read it. — Nick
